Tea And Sustainability – Environmental, Economic and Social Issues in The Tea Industry

Sustainability is a broad topic that describes whether a practice can be done indefinitely without harming people or society or the environment in such a way that the practice must be stopped. One common concept is the “three pillars of sustainability”: social, environmental, and economic issues. In order for a practice to be sustainable, it must be sustainable in each of these three senses. The word “sustainable” is sometimes used interchangeably with the word “green”, but sustainability is a broader concept.

Environmental Issues in Tea Production:

Issues associated with fertilizer use: Because tea leaves are continually being harvested, resulting in the loss of nutrients in the leaves, nutrients must be continually added in order for tea to continue being harvested. Unfortunately, natural and ecologically-friendly fertilizers are not the norm in the tea industry: chemical nitrogen fertilizers, including ammonia and nitrate-based fertilizers, are the norm. These fertilizers can lead to a number of problems. Although small amounts of these nutrients are beneficial on land, when they flow into water and become concentrated, they can damage aquatic ecosystems, which can destroy or negatively impact fishing industries as well. Overfertilization can also result in soil acidification and contamination of water supplies with nitrates.

Social Issues on the Congo

Coming to terms with the conflict taking more than 5 million., Dan Balluff realized his calling was to try and save the barely remembered country. The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has been fighting war and other social issues.

After finishing his Peace Corps service in 1988, Dan traveled to the DRC. He was instantly amazed by its pristine rain forest and the gigantic Congo River. Dan’s concern for the DRC brought him to find out as much information he could and this made him realize the Congo held many secrets. He took time out of his life to investigate and make informational films on the war the DRC hides.

Upon research, Dan found that there are thousands of street children in the Congo who struggle daily to live. A majority of these children are orphans and have turned to prostitution as a means of survival. Accusations of child witchcraft have also been a reoccurring theme in the Congo, which has lead to the documentary, Children of Congo: from War to Witches.

Dan began posting his media on talent sites in hope of spreading consciousness of the situation in the DRC. He has also produced other documentaries and comedy shorts. However, Dan has expressed his commitment to social issues, “I hope to be able to continue making films about issues and countries that need more public awareness.”

This way of life spread out across Asia as a dominating religion and quickly increased the number of followers centuries after Buddha lived.

Once, the truth is internalized, layers of teachings on matters such as nature of existence, life, death, self and suffering can be uncovered.

The main point is not only to believe but to explore and test the doctrines from your own experience. And this aspect is what makes Buddhism applicable to address social problems and concerns. Just by simply exploring the numerous studies done by famous psychologists, Buddhism’s effect on society becomes apparent. Countless journals and surveys have delved on the effects of meditation on the brain. Since, meditation is a skill commonly mastered by practicing Buddhist.
